If your modern space is lacking color, consider an abstract rug for your living room. With no specific pattern, abstract designs use color and texture to convey a feeling or story. Depending on the design, grey, blue, and green abstract rugs may look like a stormy ocean. But the same rug may give a calming feeling to others. We love the Omari rug by Weave and Wander. Its deep blue watercolor design gives any space a cool (quite literally) vibe.
If you’re digging the mid century modern style, you’ll need a rug to match it. Mid Century Modern is reminiscent of the modern style that was popular in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is characterized by open natural designs, neutral and warm colors, and graphic patterns. We love this Gemology rug designed by Justina Blakeney. It checks all the boxes for a Mid Century Modern living room rug. And, it’s made from 100% wool, making it soft, tough, and easy to clean.
If you're going for a modern/traditional mix, consider a modern living room persian or oriental rug. The Skye rug by Loloi II features a traditional oriental pattern in muted colors and styling. It gives a nod to timeless design without taking away from a modern living room.
People love the easy feel of farmhouse style. Farmhouse style is nostalgic, casual, organic, and inviting. Farmhouse living rooms are a comfortable gathering place for the home. A modern farmhouse living room rug should be textured, have simple lines, and give the room an aged feel. We love the< Spaces Area Rug by Kaleen for the modern farmhouse living room.
Before you pick your rug, determine what size you’ll need.
Measure the room. Ideally the rug will be centered in the room, leaving at least 12”- 18” of space between the edge of the rug and the wall. All living room furniture should fit completely on the rug.
Once you have an idea of what size rug will fit well in your space, tape it off. Using removable masking tape, measure the rug size with tape on your floor. Move the furniture in place. This will help you to visualize the rug size better in your space.
If you’re on a budget, you may opt for a smaller rug. A smaller rug will work just fine as long as the front two feet of sofas, chairs and other furniture fit on the rug.
