Modern living room decor tends to highlight what’s so special about modern design as a whole; beauty in simplicity.
Simplicity- Modern living room decor shouldn’t over saturate the space; a big part of modern decor is purposefully being minimal and not overwhelming the senses. That being said, modern style is also not a borning, blank canvas. When designing your living room, choose fewer statement pieces and accessories so that those elements shine through and don’t compete with other elements of the room.
Geometric Shapes- Modern home decor such as pillows, blankets, rugs, and artwork tend to use geometric shapes in their design. If you want to design a modern bohemian living room, choose geometric prints that are aztec prints. Modern farmhouse shapes tend to be buffalo plaid or softer, rounded shapes.
Wall Art- Wall art can also play into the geometric shapes, but they don’t have to. Abstract artwork is another way to add in visual interest and incorporate a new color if that’s what you want to do. If you’re creating a modern living room that blends with another style such as coastal, farmhouse, or something else, choose artwork that displays an item associated with that style, but have it displayed in a modern way. For example, use a black and white, cleanly printed photo of a bison versus a traditional, painted one to bring in a modern farmhouse vibe.
Knick-Knacks- Modern living room home decor may not use a lot of items, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t include any shelf ornaments or knick-knacks. Common accessories include small geometric ornaments, plants, and book piles. However, these are just a few ideas, and there are plenty of other knick-knacks out there you can incorporate, especially when blending modern style with something else. Knick-knacks and accessories are an essential part of modern living room decor and are vital in making the space feel intentionally decorated and not sparse.
Rugs- Rugs are a great way to add warmth in your living room, incorporate patterns, and reinforce a color scheme. You can include the popular black and white colors and geometric patterns, or you can add in a pop of color. Plus, a rug is also another opportunity to blend modern style with another popular design style. You can easily blend styles and colors for modern farmhouse, modern boho, modern coastal, modern glam, and even modern traditional based on the color schemes you choose and the patterns you use with your rug.
Modern living room home decor tends to fit into a black and white color scheme. Gray is another color often added in, and one way to keep your living room from feeling too stark is to incorporate green plants. This adds in another shade of color, a different texture, and is more vibrant than the stark colors of the room. Furniture and accents tend to fit into the neutral color scheme, but they can specifically look great as leather or faux leather to add dimension and brightness.
Modern home decor is all about creating welcoming spaces that feel sleek but approachable. It tends not to be gaudy or overly ornate--just homey and approachable. Because modern style is about creating relatable spaces, it’s definitely going to stay in style for a while and remain an approachable, friendly design style.
