Are you on the hunt for a dining room area rug? A well-chosen rug can bring color, style, texture, and definition to a dining room. How will you know if the rug you're looking at will be a good fit for your dining space? We've got your back, check out these tips to be sure you find the perfect dining room area rug:
Sizing Up Your Dining Room
When in doubt, go big! When choosing the size for your dining room rug, err on the big side. You'll want to make sure there is at least 24"? of the rug on all sides of the dining table. This ensures chairs won't catch on the edge of the rug when they're moving in and out from the table. Plus, a large rug in the dining room can make a statement and can set the tone for the space.
Materials Matter for Your Dining Room Rug
In the dining room, we all know spills are unavoidable so you'll want to choose a rug that is easy to clean.
Opt for a flat weave or low pile rug as long pile rugs trap crumbs and absorb liquids, making them difficult to clean. Short pile or flat weave rugs make much easier to clean; especially in natural fibers such as cotton or wool.
Outdoor/Indoor rugs are another great choice for the dining room as they are made to resist stains and withstand scrubbing.
Dine In Style
Colors: avoid light colors and tones in dining room rugs. In a space where you'll be hosting dinner parties, family dinners, and even late night snacks, deep colors and rich tones not only complement the space, they work well to hide crumbs and stains.
Patterns: a patterned area rug will do the same thing. Interesting patterns and designs make crumbs and spots much harder to see.
Style: for a farmhouse look, check out blue, brown, and black and white rugs for the dining room. Vintage and braided encompass that farmhouse vibe and work great in this space.
Shape: consider the shape of your table and the shape of your room. A rectangle rug in a rectangular room and/or under a rectangular table brings order to a formal dining room. This additional layer frames the room and adds dimension. However, if you'd like something that's unexpected and exciting, choose a different shaped rug. For example, if your room is rectangular and your table is square, a round rug centered under the table can make the space feel more playful and interesting.
