A blue area rug can highlight your room’s decor by reinforcing a color scheme, furthering your style, and establishing the tone. If you really want to tie the room together, look at the rug’s pattern for any imagery, shapes, or motifs that you can carry over into the other decor; that will take your room to the next level.
Blue is such a versatile color that you’ll find it comes in every style. Aside from all the options with interior design styles, blue area rugs are available in different sizes, shapes, pile heights, materials, etc. Each of these areas warrants a great deal of thought, but material in particular is important, since each has its own texture, appearance, durability, and ease of cleaning. Look at the popular options like jute, cotton, wool, and others to see how it meets your needs and then move onto those other areas to choose your rug.
With so many options out there to choose from, you may be wondering how to find your perfect rug. If you start by considering these key topics, that will guide you through the shopping process.
Position: Early on, you should decide on the room’s layout and where you want to place your rug.
Living Room: In the living room, you’ll likely use a large blue area rug to ground your main seating area. You have the choice of putting it in front of the seats, under their front legs, or further under the chairs. Alternatively, a smaller blue rug can accent a separate sitting area for reading or coffee.
Dining Room: When you add a rug to your dining room, center it beneath your table and choose a rug that has plenty of room on the sides and ends for the chairs. About two feet is a good size and allows the chairs to be on the rug at all times.
Bedroom: If your bed is centered along a wall, you can establish it as a focal point by laying a rug beneath the bed. However, if your bed is off to one side, you can still use an area rug in the middle of the room or along the side of the bed.
Kitchen: 2x3 and 3x5 blue rugs are often placed right by a kitchen sink or stovetop. However, you can use a runner rug to cover the same territory and create a path if you have a narrow kitchen.
Bathroom: Similar to kitchens, you can use a blue runner rug to define a path, but you can also use it to dress up a double vanity. Otherwise, look at using 2x3/3x5 rugs by a tub, shower, or sink.
Outdoors: If you’re looking to add style to your deck, patio, or porch, a blue outdoor rug can help you do just that. For layout ideas, look back at similar indoor spaces.
Shape/Size: Once the layout is decided, you can finalize the size and shape of your rug. When you choose, you have to take into account the size of the room and how your rug will be layering with the furniture. Some smaller sizes have been recommended above, but for medium to large spaces, look at 5x7, 8x10, and 9x12 rugs.
Pattern: Blue is one of those colors that pops up in every interior design style. That means you can find patterns like Moroccan, oriental, geometric, modern, farmhouse, nautical, and so many others. When you choose a pattern, look at your existing decor for any similar shapes or motifs to make the room feel thematically consistent.
Color: Even within blue rugs, there’s still a lot to consider with color. For example, are you looking for a light blue, navy blue, or multiple shades of blue? Then, what other colors do you want in the rug? There are classic combinations like blue and white, but blue can also be paired with grey, gold, brown, black, and other hues. Ultimately, your rug’s color palette should reinforce the room’s existing color scheme and carry the same tone.
What are the most popular shades of blue rugs?
Popular shades include dark blue, indigo, navy blue, light blue and periwinkle
Can you machine wash a blue rug?
Always check the label of the rug for washing directions, finer materials like wool and silk should not be placed in the washing machine
Where should you place a blue rug?
Blue rugs can be universally placed anywhere in your house, as they evoke calm and relaxed feelings.
