What is Modern Decor?

Modern decor is all about clean cut lines and simplicity. It often uses furniture and decor that’s very simple and uncluttered at its core so that the room looks intentionally decorated but doesn’t overwhelm the eye.

How Can I Make My Home Look More Modern?

Geometric Shapes and Lines - Modern furniture and other furnishings tend to be simple in their design with clean-cut lines and not many ornate, carved details. The decor that goes with it often fits those same qualifications, except geometric shapes are one popular design or pattern that pops up frequently with modern home decor. You may use shapes on an accent wall, in the artwork, or in the room’s main rug. 

Wall Art and Accessories - Wall art in modern home decor tends to be either abstract, displaying nature, or personal artwork. Personal artwork is sometimes hung in black and white to fit that popular color palette, but this artwork also presents an opportunity to add in color. Subject matter varies greatly depending on if you’re going with a pure modern style or if you’re blending it with something else. 

Color Scheme - The most popular version of modern design tends to use black and white as its primary colors. If you’re mixing modern style with another design style, then the accent colors and even base colors can vary.

What Colors Work With Modern Decor?

Modern style is best known for working with stark black and white, but modern design is often mixed with other design families. Here are some examples of color palettes with different design styles combined with modern design.

Mid-Century Modern: Blue and yellow are popular colors not only in the accents, but also in big ways like the wall colors or furniture colors. 

Modern Boho: The base colors tend to be neutral tans and whites, and then other colors appear in the accessories and decorations. Popular colors include teal, blue, and earth tones, but with modern boho, you can use just about any color you want. 

Modern Farmhouse/ Modern Coastal: Both of these styles use a lot of white, but modern farmhouse tends to be more black and white while coastal definitely adds in more navy and green. 

Modern Country/Modern French Country: Country and French Country both highlight nature by using light toned wood in the furniture and decor. To add color to the space, people often use muted colors like light blues, yellows, and greens.

Modern Rustic/Modern Vintage: Modern rustic decor also uses wood as a huge part of its design, but it uses wood that looks clean and refined as opposed to the well-loved look you sometimes see in other rustic designs. As for modern vintage decor, they use furniture and accents that are older but look clean and polished. 

Modern Tuscan/Traditional: Modern style tends to be very simple and basic but these two styles add in a few ornate details with the finish on furniture and decor. Brown, tan, and stone are common colors/materials. 

Is Modern Decor Going Out Of Style?

Modern decor is about finding beauty in simplicity and creating spaces that are both functional and stylish. Because of those focal points and how well modern design can tie to other popular styles, it’s going to stick around for a while and be a timeless trend.
