A turtle rug can highlight your room’s decor by reinforcing the room’s theme, backing up your color palette, and helping to set the tone. Turtles obviously are associated with coastal style homes, and incorporating the imagery into your rug gives you room to carry the coastal motif from the rug to your wall art, pillows, and other decor.
Even within turtle area rugs, there are plenty of options in terms of styles, patterns, and color palettes. You can find rugs that feature cartoonish turtles for kids’ rooms, hyper-realistic turtles for bold coastal homes, or rugs that feature shapes that are faint references to turtles. Then there are a variety of color palettes, pile heights, and shapes to choose from. When it comes to decorating with a turtle rug, you’re not stuck with just one or two options; you can shop through many of them to find one perfect for you.
When you’re looking for a rug for your home, you may be feeling a bit lost on how to focus your search. Thinking through these categories will help you determine what you need and what style you fall into.
Position: First, look at your room and decide where a rug would best fit within your layout. Each room is unique, but these general ideas will at least guide you in the right direction.
Living Room: If you want to add style to your main seating area, then you can center a rug in the middle of that space. Your layout can have the rug in front of the seats, under the front legs, or further beneath the chairs. If you want to make a softer statement, try using a smaller turtle rug to establish a small sitting area.
Dining Room: Whenever you add a rug to your dining room, center it beneath the table and leave about two-three feet of extra rug on each side so the chairs can be comfortably pushed in and out.
Bedroom: Rugs are often layered with the bed to create a central focal point. How much you layer it with the bed is up to you, but oftentimes, the rug will be all the way under the bed, under the bottom two-thirds of it, or closer to the foot of the bed. Alternatively, if your bed is off to one side, center a turtle area rug in the middle of the bedroom or right along the side of the bed.
Kitchen: Kitchens typically benefit from smaller rugs like 2x3’s or 3x5’s. Rugs of these sizes can be placed in front of a sink or stove, but another idea is to use a turtle runner rug along those same spaces if you have a galley kitchen or a kitchen with an island.
Bathroom: Those smaller 2x3 and 3x5 turtle rugs are also commonly used in front of a tub, sink, or shower. Runners have their place in the bathroom too, as they’re great for dressing up a double vanity or establishing a path.
Outdoors: Turtles are outdoor creatures, so naturally turtle printed rugs are also available for your outdoor spaces. For layout inspiration, look back at similar indoor spaces.
Size/Shape: Once you know your ideal layout, you can finalize the size and shape of your rug. For shape, you have the common options of round, rectangular, and runner along with other options. The shape you choose ultimately impacts the tone of the rug (since rounded rugs tend to give off a softer vibe than rugs with rigid corners) but it also impacts how you layer it with the furniture and what size you choose. Popular sizes include 5x7, 8x10, 9x12, and others. Ultimately, your rug’s shape and size should fit into your ideal layout and be to scale with the rest of the room.
Pattern: As stated earlier, turtle rugs are available in a wide array of designs. Some will feature a pattern while others are more like artwork with a full design created and charted out. For guidance in choosing a design/pattern, look at your existing decor for similar tones, imagery, and style.
Color: The colors within your sea turtle rug often use beachy colors like tan, white, green, and blue. How bright the colors are and what other colors are incorporated into the rug’s design really impacts the overarching tone, so choose a palette that uses your desired colors in ways that support your room’s mood.
