A straw area rug can highlight your room’s decor by contributing to the room’s overarching style, reinforcing the color palette, and emphasizing the tone of the room. When you find ways for your rug and decor to work towards the same goal, you inadvertently allow each piece to shine as a larger piece of the puzzle.
When you’re decorating with a straw area rug, you don’t have to worry about sacrificing style or comfort. These rugs are often a blend of different materials like plastic, sisal, jute, or other materials. This makes them both durable and comfortable, and aside from those perks, there are a variety of patterns and designs to choose from within straw rugs. When you’re looking for the rug that’s right for you, there are a few key topics for you to consider. Thinking about each of these areas early on will help you shop with confidence and hone in on your perfect rug.
Position: First, set up your room’s layout and decide where you want to place your rug within that.
Living Room: The most popular layout is to center your rug with your main seating area by placing the rug in front of the seats, under their front legs, or further beneath them. Otherwise, use a smaller rug in another area of the room to establish a coffee corner or reading space.
Dining Room: A tried and true layout for dining rooms is to center the rug beneath the table. Be sure to leave about two to three feet of extra space on each side of the table for the chairs to be pushed in and out.
Bedroom: If your bed is a central focal point of the room, try laying your rug directly beneath the bed by placing the rug all the way under it, under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, or closer to the foot of the bed. If your bed is off to one side, center the rug in the middle of the room or line it up along the side of the bed.
Kitchen: 2x3 or 3x5 straw rugs are ideal in front of a kitchen sink or other area where you tend to be stationary. Another option is to use a straw runner rug in galley kitchens or kitchens with an island.
Bathroom: Similar to kitchens, use small rugs in front of sinks, tubs, or showers. If you have a double vanity or a narrow path, use a straw runner in the space.
Outdoors: Straw outdoor rugs are a great choice for any deck, patio, or porch. For layout ideas, look at similar indoor spaces.
Size/Shape: Once you know your ideal layout, consider the size and shape of the rug. Smaller sizes have been listed above, but for medium to large rooms, look at 5x7, 8x10, and 9x12 rugs. These standard sizes are a good go-to for many, and yet there are plenty of other choices out there to fit your specific room. And then for shape, choose one that works best with your furniture and style.
Pattern: Fortunately, straw area rugs come in all sorts of designs. Some will use stripes to showcase texture and slight color variations while others will include more intricate vintage or oriental prints. The pattern you ultimately choose should connect to your other decor thematically and not be too busy or too plain for the room.
Color: Straw area rugs come in a variety of colors as well, so you can truly create your style. From the yellow hues associated with straw all the way to red, green, blue, and other hues, you have your pick. Choose a palette that has similar shading to the other decor and conveys the same tone.
