Rug Size Guides
Choosing the right size rug for your office is essential in creating a workspace that flows by creating a space that not only suits your style but allows you to focus all your energy into your creative outlet. Each room is unique in layout and size, ranging from a cozy small office to a full 12x14 space for the modern and antique designer alike. We've spent time to analyze what works and what doesn't so you can start the process of decorating your office without the stress.
Office rugs are great for creating a comfortable workspace that reflects your personal style and creates an ideal working environment. When you’re looking to add an office rug to the mix, it’s important to think about the shape of the rug, its size, and what colors/patterns are used in the rug’s design. All of these aspects will help you create your ideal style and maintain a balanced office space.
Just like any other room in your home, it’s key to measure your specific room to determine which size and shape rug you’ll use for your office. If you’re simply accentuating your desk area, then a rectangular 4x6 or 5x8 rug can work perfectly in that scenario. However, if you have a larger office space and want to fill out the room, some standard sizes include 6x9 and 8x10 rugs. Rugs of those sizes allow you to dress up your desk with a rug and extend into the rest of the room to add more style or practicality with additional seating/meeting space.
Rectangular is definitely the most common shape, especially since most desks tend to be the same shape. However, if you’re looking to style your space differently, you can use a round rug, a square one, or another shape. The key is to look at your specific room size/layout and how you want to layer it with the desk and other furniture. Many of the layouts will be the same as rectangular; the tone the shape creates is what will change.
The first step in sizing a rug for an office is to decide how you want to layer it with the furniture. If you’re layering it with your desk, choose a rug that’s about two feet larger than the desk size and large enough that the chair has plenty of room to move around on the rug. If your goal is to fill the whole room, measure so that there’s at least one-two feet of space between the sides of the rug and the wall.
Once again, to fill your entire space, you can choose a rectangular, round, or other shaped rug. Round and square rugs can work well to provide perfect symmetry in a 10x10 office.
Shapes:
The best size rugs to fill an 8x10 office rug would be a rectangular rug, a round or square rug, or a smaller shaped rug to accent a small seating area for guests. If you’re just looking to establish your desk area, then your rug size depends on the overall size of your desk. Continue reading a bit further to see full guidelines on choosing a rug to go under a desk.
When it comes to a 14x18 office space you have options depending on how you'd like to design it. Whether it's to ground the room or strategically place smaller rugs, we've got the breakdown for you here:
If you want a round or square office rug to fill the room, then you’ll likely use a 12’ rug.
Moving into a larger office space there are several options to choose from as you're able to tie the room together to accentuate or ground the space depending on your style. We recommend the following:
Best 12x14 Office Rugs:
The material you choose should be soft enough for your comfort but also practical in terms of its durability and pile height. For example, if you are laying a rug beneath your desk and have a rolling office chair, you likely won’t enjoy a shag rug. In that case, a low pile rug would be better for the chair to sit on or another mat atop the rug specifically made for wheeled office chairs. As for color and pattern, you should look at your other decor and overall style to choose a palette and pattern that conveys your style and sets the tone for the room.
Often times when you place a rug beneath your office desk, you’ll line up part of the rug with the front of the desk and have the rest of the rug extend behind the desk where your seat is. However, desks come in many different styles and sizes, such as wall mount desks, floating desks, corner desks, and traditional executive/computer desks.
Remember though, it’s key to look at the size of the room, the placement of your desk, and the size of your desk to decide what the proper size is for your desk’s rug.
