Why Rug Size is Important in the Bedroom Design

Aesthetically, your bedroom rug can exemplify your personal style with patterns, colors, and material. The rug can even complement other decor like pillows, blankets, and wall art to round out the room’s design. Aside from these stylistic functions, bedroom rugs also provide a soft surface to step onto each day and protect your floor.

How to Measure Your Bedroom for a Rug

The size of your bedroom is as big a factor as the size of your bed and nearby furniture. When getting the room’s size, measure the length and width of the primary portion of the room. Each bedroom is unique in its sizing and dimensions, so there is a standard principle to apply to rug sizing instead of one specific answer. If your goal is to fill the room with a rug, leave at least one foot of floor exposed between the rug and the walls. This will ensure that the rug doesn’t make the room feel cramped or overfilled. Alternatively, you can determine your rug’s size by comparing it to your bed’s size.

What are the Rug Size Guidelines for Different Bed Sizes?

Since it is common practice to center a rug directly beneath a bed, there are some common rug sizes used in these scenarios. Twin beds are often complemented by a 5x8 rug, full size beds by a 6x9 rug, queen beds by an 8x10 rug, and king sized beds by 9x12 rugs. These standard rug sizes and pairings assume that the entire rug or the majority of it is layered beneath the bed. If your rug is placed closer to the foot of the bed or alongside the bed, you may choose a slightly smaller rug.

What are the Different Rug Placement Options in a Bedroom

The most popular layout is to center your rug directly beneath the bed and have it rest under the majority of the bed. Alternatively, you may place your rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed or even closer to the foot of the bed. If your layout has the bed off to one side of the room, consider centering a rug in the middle of the room itself and have one side of the bed overlap with the rug. You may also choose to place smaller rugs or runner rugs on either side of the bed to provide comfort without overwhelming the room.

What are the Common Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing a Bedroom Rug Size?

The biggest mistake people make when choosing a bedroom rug size is not scaling the rug size correctly to the room and nearby furniture. Remember this guideline to help you scale the rug to the bed in particular: the rug should extend at least 2 feet past the sides and end of the bed. This will help you create visual balance with the size of the bed. It’s acceptable to have more than 2 feet of rug exposed on each side/end, but when you do so, avoid having the rug bump up against larger furniture. Determining your layout will also help you scale the rug to your furniture and room. If you take the approach of centering your rug in the middle of the room, you will choose a size that provides a soft surface throughout the majority of the room while leaving some breathing room for larger furniture to stand alone.

How Does Rug Shape Impact the Choice of Rug Size?

Shape impacts the room’s overall tone and how the rug layers with your furniture. Rectangular rugs are the most popular option thanks to their diverse stylings and size options, but round, square, and oblong faux furs are also ideal options for personalizing your bedroom. Using different shapes gives you great options with how you fit your room’s layout, complement your furniture, and show off your personality.
