Rug Size Guides
Full sized and twin beds are both common in kids’ rooms, teens’ rooms, and guest rooms. No matter what room you have your twin or full sized bed in, adding a rug to that room can help accentuate your style and add comfort to the room. However, when incorporating a rug, it is important to balance it with the size of the bed, size of the room, and general layout.
The twin sized mattress is 38 inches wide and 75 inches long. With an addition of a bedframe, your bed will likely be 40-43 inches wide and between 77 and 80 inches long. Although these differences seem miniscule, the size of your bedroom and the size of the bed posts will all impact the scale of the room and how a rug should balance out the space.
If you have a singular twin bed in your bedroom and you would like to make it a key focal point, center a rug beneath the bed and have the rug press up against the headboard’s wall. 5x8 and 6x9 rugs are ideal for these scenarios, since that leaves plenty of extra room on each side and the end for walking on the rug. In smaller bedrooms, consider using a 5x7 area rug and set it under the bottom two-thirds of the bed instead (in front of the nightstands). A 4x6 rug can be used in a similar way, although it may be placed closer to the bottom third of the bed.
Aside from centering a rug directly beneath the bed, you may place a rug in the middle of the room itself if your bed is off to one side. The exact size of the rug will vary depending on the size of the room and if it will overlap with the bed or nearby furniture, but the sizes recommended above are a good starting point in determining what will best suit your room.

Full beds, also referred to as double beds or double mattresses, are 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. With the addition of a bedframe, your bed may fill an area that is 56-59 inches wide and 77-80 inches long. Once again, the frame you choose does impact how the bed fits the room’s scale and balances with the rug and other furniture.
If you are hoping to center a rug all the way beneath the bed and have the rug pressed up against the headboard’s wall, then an 8x10 or 6x9 rug is ideal for you. In situations where you want to have the rug set in front of the nightstands and then flow out past the foot of the bed, a 6x9 rug can still be used if you have a medium to large bedroom. However, 5x8 rugs are also used in these situations, and 5x7 area rugs can similarly sit under the bottom half of a full bed.
In bedrooms where the full bed is off to one side, you can use a large area rug in the middle of the bedroom to create that central focal point and connect multiple areas of the room. The size of the rug will vary depending on the size of the room and how the rug will/will not overlap with the bed. In general, the sizes recommended above can be used in these situations.
The size of your bedroom rug should scale to the size of the bed and entire room. If you are layering a rug all the way beneath the bed, the rug will be a larger size like a 6x9 for twin beds or an 8x10 for full beds.
One general rule is that 2 or 3 feet of rug should be shown on each side of the bed (assuming that the rug is centered beneath the bed). If you are placing a rug in the middle of the room, be sure that there is at least 6 inches of floor exposed between the rug and wall, or else the room will feel cluttered and imbalanc
If your goal is to set two twin beds on top of the same rug, a 9x12 rug will provide enough space between the two beds and on each side of them. Alternatively, a round rug can be placed between the two beds or runners can be used in the middle space and on the sides.
Rug pads are recommended for nearly all rugs, even those that are placed primarily underneath the bed. Not only do rug pads add extra comfort to those exposed rug surfaces, but they also extend the life of the rug, protect the floor, and keep the rug from sliding out of place
Adding rugs to bedrooms with full and twin sized beds is an ideal way to add a comfortable texture, unique pattern, and beautiful color to your bedroom. The layout options with beds and rugs are endless, but with these general principles and common layouts in mind, you may now decorate your bedroom with ease to create your signature style.
