What Is the Correct Size Rug To Pair With a Sectional Couch or Sofa?

A sectional sofa creates an inviting, comfy seating area to bring your living room to life. But finding the right rug size for sectionals isn't always easy. The size and shape of the rug you choose will depend on the shape of your sofa. For example, you'll want a different rug for chaise lounge-style sectionals than you will for a U-shaped sofa.

What Is the Average Size Living Room Rug?

Generally, you'll want the largest rug size you can afford. Here are standard suggestions for rug sizes under sectionals:

  • Correct rug size for 75" couch: A 75" sofa (6.25') can pair nicely with any rug that's at least 6' x 9' or larger.
  • What rug size for 91" x 91" sectional: A 91" x 91" sectional (7.5' x 7.5') calls for a rug that's at least 8' x 10'.
  • What size rug for a 9' x 12' couch: A 9' x 12' sectional (108" x 144") will work well with a rug that's 10' x 14' or larger.
  • What size area rug with a 10' x 10' sectional: A 10' x 10' sectional (120" x 120") will work best with a rug that's at least 12' x 15'.

The rug sizes suggested above should help you find the right fit for your sectional if you need an answer now. If you'd like to learn more about how to pick rug sizes for sectionals, this guide has the answers, and we're here to help.

How To Place and Size a Rug for an L-shaped Sectional Sofa?

If you're trying to decide what size rug for a corner sofa, chaise sofa, or L-shaped sectional, you'll first want to consider placement. For a grounded appeal, either position the sectional with all legs on the rug's surface or place only the front legs on the rug.

Placing just the front legs on the rug will allow you to purchase a smaller rug than putting all of the legs on the rug. And with all legs on the rug, you'll want at least 1' of rug extending beyond the sofa to help ground and anchor the space. If you have room, you can extend the rug 2' to 4' past the edge of the sofa for a larger padded area.

If you place just the front legs on the rug, you'll be able to use a smaller area rug, such as a 5' x 8'. You can also use a 4' x 6' area rug in front of an L-shaped sectional if you leave a 12" strip of exposed floor around the rug.

And if you need to know how to choose a rug size for a chaise or L-shaped sectional, buy a rug with a slightly longer length than your sectional. This will ensure your rug is big enough for several different placements.

How Should You Size a Rug for a Three-Piece (U-shaped) Sectional Sofa?

A three-piece sectional, also known as a U-shaped sectional, has two different rug size options. You could pick a large rug that fits under the whole sectional, ideal for spacious living rooms, or a small area rug to fit within the U-shape in the center.

Both will look great with a U-shaped sectional, so don't worry too much as you choose your area rug size. Sectionals tend to be the centerpiece of the room, and as long as you pick a rug size that fits, you'll be fine.

What Is the Correct Size Rug To Place Under a Small Sectional?

Small sectionals work well when paired with other furniture pieces, like comfy chairs, or in areas with limited space, such as apartment living rooms.

A small 75" sectional would sit nicely on a 6' x 9' area rug with all the legs on the rug or just the front legs. A 5' x 8' or 4' x 6' rug would also work if you have limited square footage or would like to save money.

When pairing small rugs with sectionals, keep a 12" strip of bare floor framing the rug to make the separation from the sofa appear intentional.

How To Place an Oversized Round Rug Under Sectional Sofa?

An oversized round rug (at least 9' or 10' in diameter) can pair nicely with most L-shaped or U-shaped sectionals. It'll also work well with two sofas placed across from each other in a symmetrical layout.

Depending on the size of your sofa, place it at one edge of the oversized round rug or a couple of feet back from the rug's center. For two (2) symmetrical sofas, rug sizes as large as you can fit in your room are best, as you'll likely want to place the front legs of both sofas on the edge of the rug.

What Is the Correct Size Rug for a Rounded Corner Sectional?

A rounded corner sectional introduces an element of whimsy into the room. If the sectional is only slightly rounded, you can follow the same rug guidelines for a standard L-shaped or U-shaped sofa (depending on the shape of your rounded sectional).

Small and large rugs work well for rounded corner sectionals with a more exaggerated curve. If you have the space for a large area rug (8' x 10' or 9' x 12'), try placing it in the center of your living room and positioning your sectional on top of it.

If you'd like to use a smaller rug, you might consider a round area rug placed about 12" in front of the sectional. Alternately, try a faux cowhide rug for visual interest in front of the sectional.
