The bedroom is a highly personal space – it expresses your character and gives you a place of respite after long days. And adding an area rug to your bedroom is a quick way to make it feel cozier and more relaxing, with soft textures and styling that reflects your unique tastes. A twin bed is often used for a smaller room, but that doesn't mean you should skimp on accentuating the room with a nice rug! Learn more about which rug size you should use and why below.
The standard rug size for under a coffee table varies depending on the size and shape of the coffee table as well as the room that it’s situated in. In general, the most popular sizes for coffee table rugs include 4x6, 5x8, 6x9, and 8x10. Round and square rugs in this range of sizes are also available to sit beneath coffee tables. Similar to rectangular rugs, the exact size you choose of these shaped rugs will depend on the shape of your coffee table and how you plan on layering the rug with other furniture.
Rectangular coffee table sizes often vary in three areas: height, length, and depth. The height is fairly standard as it ranges between 16” and 20”, but the depth and length can vary. Standard length for rectangular coffee tables is anywhere between 48” and 54”, while the depth is often between 24” and 30”. As for other shapes like round and oval, round coffee tables are often between 30” and 48” inches and oval tables are typically about 22” wide and 54” long.
The sofa size can impact the size of your rug in two ways: First, you want to ensure that the rug doesn’t look too large or too small in comparison to the seats, accent tables, and room itself. In these situations, a general rule of thumb is that your coffee table should be half or 2/3 the size of the sofa, which in turn leads you to choose a rug that is about 18” larger than the coffee table around all the edges. Secondly, you may choose a larger rug if you decide to layer your coffee table rug with the sofa’s front legs or further beneath the furniture. In these cases, consider larger area rugs like 8x10, 9x12, or even 12x15 to ground your larger seating area.
Putting a rug under your coffee table can help reinforce the room’s style, provide a new soft texture, and tie your entire seating area together. These are just three of the most popular reasons to put a rug beneath a coffee table, but since rugs are so versatile and functional, there are dozens more reasons to incorporate one into your living room.

If you’re choosing to simply put a rug beneath the coffee table and not any other living room furniture, then you have the straightforward task of centering the table on top of the rug. If you plan on extending your rug further to be under the sofa’s front legs as well, be sure that at least 18” of rug extends past the sides and ends of the table and that you have at least that amount of space between the sofa and the table. Following these guidelines will help you line everything up to look balanced and be practical.
As you start looking for that perfect rug, it’s essential to measure the size of the coffee table and sofa to help you determine the rug’s scale to those pieces of furniture. Have an idea in mind of how much rug you’d like on each side/end of the table, if you’d like it to layer with the sofa, and how much space you need around the coffee table itself. Not only is the size of your rug important, but so is the material as you determine the texture of your rug, how durable it is, and how easy to clean it is. Some popular, easy to clean materials are wool, polypropylene, jute, and cotton. Rug pads and non-slip grips are also essential to maintain the life of your rug and keep it safely set.
The minimum recommendation for rugs extending beyond a coffee table is 18”. This measurement is used under the assumption that your rug is only beneath the coffee table, not under any other furniture. If your sofa is resting under the front legs of other furniture or further beneath them, then you’ll likely have the rug extend 2 or 3 feet past the coffee table as it’s under the seats.
The best size rug to put under a 2x4 coffee table is a 4x6 or 5x7. With a 4x6 rug, you’ll have about a foot of extra space on each side of the rug (which is fine for small seating areas and cramped living rooms), but to match the ideal size of 18” on each side of the table, a 5x7 rug will suit you better.
A 2x4 coffee table can fit on top of a 4x6 rug if the living room and furniture is smaller, but ideally, your coffee table would be even smaller than 2x4. Consider using a 2x3 or 3x3 coffee table to have extra room around the table for the rug to shine; not only will that show off the rug, but it will also give you more walking space on the rug to go around the table.
With a 5x8 rug, your ideal coffee table will be approximately 2x4. That gives you more than the 18” recommendation of excess rug around the coffee table, which is beneficial in creating comfortable pathways and giving your whole space room to breathe. However, a slightly longer or deeper coffee table would also work on a 5x8 rug if you are looking at a specific option you like.
A 6x9 rug can accommodate larger coffee tables that are closer to 5 feet in length. With a rug of this size, you may also want to consider layering it with the furniture at least part way to ensure that the coffee table doesn’t look too small or misplaced atop a larger rug.
Just like 6x9 rugs, 8x10 rugs can easily handle the largest coffee tables. Once again, it may be beneficial to lay the rug at least part way beneath the sofa’s front legs or under the legs of other chairs so that the table doesn’t look out of proportion with the large rug.
Placing a round rug beneath a square coffee table is an excellent way to create a unique aesthetic in your living room. Although we typically recommend having 18” of rug past the sides/corners of coffee tables, with this combination, it’s actually better to have even more than that 18”. Since the two shapes do differ from one another, choosing a larger round rug like a 5x5 or 6x6 will allow the two shapes to work in harmony instead of compete against one another.
Rectangular rugs and round coffee tables are a natural pair. If your round table is a standard size between 22 and 30 inches around, then you’ll likely go with a 5x8 or 6x9 rug. That way, if your rug is centered beneath your table, you’ll never have less than the 18” recommended clearance around the table.
Placing a round rug under a round coffee table is one of the more common layouts when it comes to round coffee tables. Since round coffee tables often range in size between 22 and 30 inches, your rug should be at least 5 feet around, although 6 feet is another good option to give your table room to breathe.
Much like placing a rectangular coffee table on a rectangular rug, you’ll want your oval table to have at least 18” of clearance between the widest and longest points of the coffee table. Depending on the length of your oval coffee table, you may want to consider a 5x8 or 6x9 rectangular rug.
