What is Farmhouse Kitchen Decor?

Farmhouse kitchen decor fits under the larger branch of farmhouse style that is famous for its rustic feel, cozy spaces, and welcoming vibes. Although it harkens back to the simplicity of farm life, it has been brought into the modern-day by blending with other styles and incorporating modern details. 

How Can I Make My Kitchen Look More Farmhouse?

Fixtures- A large part of any kitchen is defined by the kitchen's fixtures and built-ins--the cabinets, the kitchen island, countertops, etc. When you're first creating a farmhouse feel, you may need to give your current fixtures a makeover by changing the handles to be iron, the cabinets themselves to be white, cream, or antiqued, and change other things around to make it brighter and welcoming. You can think of lighting as a fixture in the kitchen as well; common lights include simple iron chandeliers and pendant lights, but these light fixtures can vary depending on which branch of farmhouse style you lean towards. 

Rugs- The rug may seem like a small component compared to the cabinets, but rugs are actually the perfect opportunity to bring in your personality and style. With farmhouse kitchen decor, you can go with a rug that is either faded and distressed, a buffalo plaid pattern, or choose a rug that is made of natural materials. Size-wise, runners are a good choice if you have space in front of your sink or leading from one doorway into the kitchen. You can also use smaller rugs like a 2x3 to sit directly in front of the sink or perhaps by a door that leads outside. 

Plants- Because farmhouse style tends to use neutral colors, adding in plants is a perfect way to add in a pop of color. You can change these plants out seasonally to reflect the colors of that season, or you can go with classic greens and vines. Succulents are a good choice to fit into modern farmhouse style.

Artwork- You can choose farmhouse wall art to hang in the kitchen to add in even more style. Common motifs with classic farmhouse are farm animals and meaningful quotes. Other branches of farmhouse style may have different preferences, such as coastal farmhouse decor fitting more into a blue and tan color scheme and referencing the beach. Rustic kitchen decor may cover more woodsy elements like paintings of evergreen trees and forests. No matter which branch you fall under, there are definitely options out there for whichever style you lean towards.

Accents- Small accessories are an important part of your kitchen decor. Plants are common accessories, but you can also include other accents like wood cutting boards, small pieces of art on the counter or display cabinets, framed family recipes, and so on. Any hand towels you have can also fit into your farmhouse scheme by fitting into the color palette or having artwork associated with farm living on it. 

What Colors Work With Farmhouse Decor?

Farmhouse decor often works with light colors and natural wood tones. White, cream and beige are often the primary colors, but accents can change depending on your style and the season. Greenery fits into just about any branch of farmhouse style, but the shade of green can vary. Dark greens are associated with rustic kitchen decor, while lighter greens fit in with French country farmhouse style and others.

Farmhouse style rose to popularity very quickly because of how approachable, attainable, and welcoming it feels. Because it highlights homey spaces and a love for simple living, farmhouse decor is going to remain in style for a long, long time.
