How Can I make My Bathroom Look More Coastal

Tone- Coastal design is all about capturing the feelings of the beach: the gentle waves, soft sand, warming sunlight, and feeling of freedom. You want to establish these same tones in your bathroom through color scheme and artwork. 

Natural Woods- Driftwood is often found by the sea, and so coastal design loves to incorporate wood tones throughout the space. Oftentimes the wood is lighter to maintain that airy feeling of the beach. You can incorporate woods in the vanity, shelving, hangers, etc. 

Subtle Nods- As opposed to filling your bathroom with buoys, anchors, and seashells, the most effective and timeless coastal bathroom decor is more subtle. Yes, you can include simple elements like seashells and greenery, but oversaturating the room with those bold items can make the theme a bit overwhelming and suffocating. So, include subtle references to those items through perhaps a soft pattern on the rug and textures throughout the space. 

Wall Decor- Coastal wall decor and wall art sometimes showcase specific beach items like shells and the beach itself, or if you want to be more subtle, you can also choose more abstract artwork that is light and airy and references the nautical with the color palette. 

Fabrics- When it comes to towels, hand towels, and rugs, there’s plenty of opportunity to add in coastal decor. The fabrics can have specific patterns and designs that harken to the beach, or they can be subtle and fit into the color scheme. 

Color Scheme- Colors are important in establishing any space, and it’s part of what makes coastal design stand out so much from other design families. Stick to the color palette and your guests will easily see what you’re going for. 

What Colors Work With Coastal Bathroom Decor?

Coastal bathrooms definitely fit into a specific color scheme. It often includes whites, beiges, and sometimes grays for its neutral colors. Blue and green are common accent colors, although blue is a little more popular. Wood tones are also encouraged, but they’re often lighter and reminiscent of driftwood or shiplap. By incorporating shiplap, you also lean into coastal farmhouse territory, which is a popular blending of styles.
