A bathroom rug can do more than just provide a soft spot for your wet toes; a well chosen rug can brighten and elevate the overall look of the space. There are many things to consider when buying a rug for the bathroom. Check out these tips to be sure you'll love your next bathroom rug!
Where To Place Your Bathroom Rug
In smaller bathrooms, a single rug can be centered in the middle of the room.
In medium-sized bathrooms, place the rug in front of the tub (to prevent slipping when getting in and out) or in front of the vanity.
Have a large bathroom? You may want to add more than one rug. If you're adding multiple rugs consider a bathroom rug set. Or, you can create your own bathroom rug set by choosing rugs that are the same style or at least complementary styles. Also, be aware of the size you need--the rug in front of the vanity will likely be a different size than the rug in front of the toilet.
Sizing Your Bathroom Rug
Picking the right size rug is always important. If the rug is too small, it can look out of place and make the room feel disjointed. However, if the rug is too big, it can overwhelm a typically small room.
Measure your bathroom and then measure the space where you'd like your rug to go.
A rug can go snug against a vanity, tub or toilet, but be sure to allow 3-5"? between the wall and the edge of the rug.
Small bathroom rugs work well in tighter spaces--think 2x3 or 3x5.
If your bathroom is on the big side, don't be afraid to add a large bathroom rug.
Picking The Right Color
The bathroom is a great place to express individual style. You can make a statement with a bold color or geometric patterned rug; paired with bright colored towels and some interesting artwork, your powder room can go from dull to intriguing.
Consider a bathroom rug in purple, red, gold or blue.
For high contrast, look for a black and white bathroom rug.
Or, if you're going for a spa-vibe, choose neutral colors, especially light blues and greens. These colors are calming and give a subtle nod to nature.
Choosing the right material for your rug is especially important in the bathroom. It will most likely get exposed to water every day, so you'll want to choose something that is durable and absorbent.
Cotton is a great option for a bath mat because it is soft, absorbent and easy to clean.
Looking for a luxury bath rug? Chenille is a super soft synthetic material that wears well in the bathroom.
You'll also want to think about how easily the rug slides on your hard bathroom floor. Consider a rug with a rubber bottom or we highly recommend using a rug pad to reduce slipping, bunching and to extend the life of your rug.
