How an Ombre Area Rug Can Highlight Your Room Decor

An ombre area rug can highlight your room’s decor by adding in a beautiful texture and design that reinforces the tone and style of your decor. When you focus on finding ways to connect your rug’s design and color palette to the other poufs, pillows, wall art, and other miscellaneous decor in the room, you create a space that is intentionally designed and stylistically consistent. 

Decorating With an Ombre Area Rug

Within the category of ombre area rugs, you still have plenty of options to choose from. You may think you’re just limited to choosing a color palette and the designs are all the same, but there are actually hundreds of designs/patterns to look through. Some will use lines in unique ways, some will have a pattern overlap atop an ombre scheme, and others will simply feature a fading of colors. No matter which way your style leans, you can find an ombre rug that’s just right for you. 

Choosing Which Ombre Area Rug is Right for You

As you shop for a rug that’s perfect for you, consider these important areas. 

Position: First, look at how you want to set up your room. These ideas will serve to guide you in the right direction. 

Living Room: Center a rug with your main seating area to establish that space practically and visually. You have the option of placing the rug in front of the seats, under their front legs, or further under the chairs. Another option is to use a small ombre rug in another corner of the room to establish a separate sitting area. 

Dining Room: Center an ombre area rug beneath your dining room table for a balanced, practical look. Be sure to leave about two or three feet of excess on each side of the table for the chairs.

Bedroom: If your bed is centered along a wall, make it the central focal point by dressing it up and adding a rug under the bed. However, if your bed is off to one side, then try placing a rug in the middle of the bedroom or along the side of the bed. 

Kitchen: Place a small 2x3 or 3x5 rug in front of a sink, stove, or other area you tend to be stationary. Otherwise, you can use a runner rug in narrow kitchens to establish a path and a comfortable landing pad for those stationary spots. 

Bathroom: Bathrooms will use the same sized rugs as kitchens, and they’ll be used in similar ways. Place small rugs in front of sinks, tubs, or showers, or use a runner rug in front of a vanity. 

Outdoors: Dress up your deck, patio, porch, or other outdoor space with an outdoor ombre rug. For layout ideas, look at similar indoor spaces. 

Shape/Size: Once the layout is set, finalize the size and shape of your rug. Ombre rugs are typically round, rectangular, or runner, but there are other shapes as well for uniquely shaped rooms or style choices. As for size, make sure you look at your specific room and choose a size that isn’t too large or too small. This is vital in making sure the room appears visually balanced. 

Pattern: There are many designs to choose from with ombre area rugs. As stated earlier, some will simply show gradients and fading colors from one end to the other, but others will show a fuller spectrum, transition back to a darker color for both ends, place a pattern atop the ombre, or show some other design. At the end of the day, choose a design that fits the tone of the room and expresses your personal style. 

Color: Since ombre rugs are really defined by their color palettes, this is the part where you really get to bring in your personality and design. Some rugs will feature one main color and different shades of it, such as blue, grey, pink, yellow, aqua, and many more. Your rug’s color palette should use similar hues to the rest of the room and convey your desired tone.
