Rug Size Guides
It is natural to cycle through rugs in your home to redefine each room’s aesthetic and fit with your new furniture/decor. However, when it comes time to get rid of a rug in one room, especially large area rugs, it can be difficult to know how to get rid of it. Fortunately, there are some great ways to safely get rid of rugs and potentially give it another chance to shine.
If your rug has plenty of life left in it, consider selling your rug. That way, the rug can still be a beautiful accent in someone’s home and fit their budget. Craigslist, Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, and Offer Up are four options for selling the rug online. Aside from those virtual selling platforms, there are local alternatives to consider. Consignment shops, yard sales, or vendors of used carpets are three easy places to get your rug on the market.
Since the rug is used, even if it was only used for a year or so, you will probably not sell the rug for full price. Even so, this is a great option to recoup some of what you put into the rug and fund your next rug shopping excursion.
Another option for getting rid of an old rug is to donate it. If transportation is an issue or the rug is simply too large for your vehicle, you can call on location organizations who may offer pick-up services. For example, some thrift stores will come to your home to pick up rugs or other furnishings that you would like to donate. Many charitable organizations, shelters, and nonprofits benefit from these donations by using them in their spaces or by passing them on to those in need. Likewise, churches, schools, and community centers can also use the rug to create welcoming, safe spaces for all who visit the organization. Thrift stores typically accept rugs as long as they are in fair condition and can be resold. If the rug is highly stained, fraying, and worn, then you may be better off finding a different way to dispose of the rug and not force one of these organizations to do it for you.
With rugs that are already well loved and falling apart, it may simply be time to get rid of the rug. Whether the rug is made of all natural materials, synthetic fibers, or a blend of the two, any rug can be recycled. In 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency and a group of carpet manufacturers signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Carpet Stewardship (MOU) to combat growing landfills and recycle rugs for other products. As a part of that mission, MOU established the Carpet America Recovery Effort (also known as CARE). You may search their site for reclaiming centers near you to drop off your rug. If there isn’t a location near you, check with your local recycling center or nearby Habitat for Humanity to help you dispose of your rug.

Perhaps you still enjoy your rug, but you simply don’t have a place for it in its designated room. If that’s the case, repurpose the rug by moving it into another room or by turning it into a piece of wall art. Small and medium rugs can be hung as tapestries and wall art to beautifully decorate any room of the home. Alternatively, if the rug is made of an outdoor-friendly material, you can always use the rug as an outdoor rug for the remainder of its life. It can add affordable design to decks, patios, porches, and other outdoor spaces that may be lacking in style.
When it’s time for a new look in your home, switching out the rug is an easy way to change the room’s entire dynamic and tone. If you are replacing one rug with another, consider one of the methods listed above for ways to dispose of your rug. Whether the rug finds new life in someone else’s home or is recycled, properly disposing of rugs is a great way to be a good caretaker of the rug and the world as a whole.
