Art Deco may be a 100+ year old style, but it’s still prominent in our modern design landscape. This is because today’s culture appreciates bold risks and artistry, which Art Deco exhibited through all of its details. This style is still used in many homes today, and while the term is thrown around frequently, many people do not know what the style actually entails and how it can be used in today’s homes.
Art Deco is unquestionably luxurious in its design. The use of sprawling arches, bold geometric shapes, and vibrant colors made the style stand out and represent the optimism of its time. When it was first developing in the 20th century, it boldly rose as a style that strayed from tradition and explored new artistry through a variety of materials. This was also a time when individual craftsmanship and mass-produced items were both popular, and so this is seen in the accents used in the iconic style.
Art Deco traces its origins back to 1925, where the style was put on display at an exhibit in France. The style was a direct response to a popular style that came before it: Art Nuevo. While Nuevo was known for using a lot of soft, rounded shapes, Art Deco expanded on that concept and included more rigid shapes and dynamic patterns to create more visual contrast and interest.
At its core, Art Deco is about artistry and breaking away from conventional norms. Art Deco architecture, furniture, and decor was all about creating an air of elegance and sophistication fitting for the time of relative peace in the 1920’s and the Roaring Twenties in the United States, which was certainly known for its extravagance.
Today, Art Deco has made a resurgence thanks to our modern appreciation of bold artistic decor and individualism. There is no style that is more “one of a kind” than Art Deco.
Art Deco took and gave inspiration to other artistic fields around it. Cubism, which is frequently used in Picaso paintings of the time, collaborated perfectly with the bold artistic steps that Art Deco was taking. Architecture similarly featured Art Deco through the use of different geometric designs and experimental, unconventional finishes. Aside from experimenting with different shapes, patterns, and motifs, Art Deco also played with different materials and finishes. Metals like gold were particularly common in Art Deco pieces to help exude an air of luxury and class. Jewel tones like emerald and sapphire were similarly used to add to the boldness of the style and reinforce the rich elegance of the style.
There are many ways to incorporate Art Deco into modern spaces. One way to add in the style is by being extremely bold. Many modern aesthetics are more subdued with limited patterns and color differences, but Art Deco thrives on bold geometric patterns and contrast with colors. The style is also all about glamor, so it’s important to elevate the tone of the space so that it feels grand and luxurious. You can do this through presenting a very sleek, intentionally designed space with purposeful artwork, accents, and accent colors.
Art is an integral part of Art Deco design. Iconic artwork from the time or inspired by the time can be used to reinforce the boldly artistic nature of the style and elevate the room’s tone. Sculptures are another area to consider, since they present unique finishes and materials. With both wall art and sculptures, you can use Art Deco styles with modern imagery to blend Art Deco with contemporary aesthetics.
Bold colors are a key part of Art Deco design. Teal, emerald, sapphire, ruby, and other jewel tones are frequently used to create an air of luxury. Aside from using these colors in wallpaper or wall art, they’re also used in different fabrics like velvet or an equally luxurious formal material. Remember, the ultimate goal of Art Deco is to create contrast and elegance, so your colors and textures should all work towards that goal.
Flooring and rugs are both areas of opportunity for Art Deco style. Rugs in particular can present bold colors and unique geometric patterns that capture the aesthetic of Art Deco. Even the floor beneath the rug can use a unique material or texture to capitalize on Art Deco’s elegant tone. Anything that boldly presents an elevated artistic design is right at home with Art Deco style.
Art Deco may have originated in the early 1900’s, but it still has a place in today’s design landscape. This style known for its great glamor, bold colors, and inventive geometric patterns is right at home in today’s society as we appreciate individuality and unconventional artwork. With that in mind, you can easily infuse Art Deco into modern spaces through the use of vibrant colors, dramatic geometric patterns, and luxurious materials. The end results will be just as stunning as the original style itself and highlight your unique, glamorous aesthetic.
