How to Stop a Rug from Shedding

Shedding rugs are an annoyance that can detract from the room’s design and aesthetic. Rugs with higher piles are known to shed more than others, but certain materials are known for shedding as well. Fortunately, there are many ways to combat shedding and prevent rugs from shedding in the future.

Why Do Rugs Shed?

Shedding can be an indicator of poor rug quality, but that is not always the case. In fact, some of the highest quality materials are the ones that initially shed. Wool rugs for example feature a highly luxurious, quality material, but they shed when the fibers face initial irritation. Machine made or hand-tufted rugs may also have some loose fibers that will be shed in the early weeks of the rug’s life. Fortunately, with all of these cases, the shedding is temporary and can be reduced or taken care of through several means. With that, here are some ways to treat shedding rugs and prevent rugs from shedding.

Vacuuming

Vacuuming the rug is a great way to remove loose fibers and prevent the rug from future shedding. This process may need to be repeated for the first few weeks of the rug’s life, but the vacuum will gradually and gently remove loose strands and clumps of material before they shed over the rug and the room. Natural materials like wool, jute, and fur benefit from this method most, since they are some of the materials that naturally shed easier. Shag rugs, no matter what material they are made of, also take well to vacuuming to remove those loose strands and clean debris and dirt. Whenever you use a vacuum on a rug, it is important to put it on the lightest setting and use a beater bar or rotating brush to ensure that the vacuum makes light, gentle contact with the rug.

Rug Pad

Rug pads are recommended with any rug to keep them in place and add extra cushioning. However, one other benefit to rug pads is that they can help prevent rug shedding. Rugs often shed due to movement and foot traffic breaking fibers on the top of the rug, but rug pads minimize that impact and protect the rug as a whole. Natural fiber rugs that are naturally prone to shedding like wool and jute also benefit from the security of the rug pad, since the rug pad provides protection for the floor beneath it and the rug above it.

Placement

Since foot traffic and movement can cause shedding in the rug, placing it in a space with less traffic can help preserve the rug and keep it from shedding. Even in this method, the rug does not have to stay in these spaces forever; as the rug sits and settles into itself, it will naturally become less likely to shed. Therefore, after a few months have passed, you can move your rug into a higher traffic location and see less shedding than you would have otherwise. Once again, this method is ideal for wool, jute, shag, and fur rugs as long as you have the patience and space to set the rug aside to prepare it for the high traffic spaces.

Rug Rakes and Brushes

Carpet rakes and brushes can be used to delicately remove loose fibers from the rug’s surface. In a pinch, pet brushes can be used, but it is wise to invest in brushes specifically made for taking care of carpets due to the soft bristles. While you gently brush the rug with the rake or brush, you will also remove dust and dirt from the rug and give it a thorough cleaning. With this method, you may want to gently vacuum the surface after brushing to ensure that you gather any loose fibers that the brush managed to grab.

Trimming

Wool rugs in particular benefit from a simple trim. Pulling out any loose tufts of wool may be tempting, but forcefully pulling at them risks damaging the surface of the rug and negatively impacting the fibers near it. In order to treat these loose fibers or clumps, use a very sharp pair of scissors. After the wool is trimmed, run your hands over the surface of the rug to collect any loose wool fibers or clumps. It is important to do this with clean hands, since you do not want to dirty the rug in the process of removing excess yarn.

Rugs Options That Don't Shed

Although shedding can easily be brought into order and removed entirely, it’s valid to choose a rug material that does not shed at all. With that in mind, here are some non-shedding materials and constructions to best suit your home right away.

Synthetic

  • Synthetic rugs made from materials like polyester and polypropylene do not shed because they don’t have the fibrous issues that are present in most natural fibers. These rugs are often machine made instead of hand-woven or hand-tufted, which also makes them appealing from a price standpoint.

Cotton

  • Cotton is a natural material, but it does not shed the way that wool or jute rugs do. Rugs made of cotton can be crafted in many ways, so high pile cotton rugs are a natural option that do not shed. Braided cotton rugs are an even more secure option for creating a rug that is resistant to shedding or tearing.

Leather

  • Pure leather or faux leather typically do not shed because of the nature of the material. These rugs are not made from fibers, so they have no fibers to loosen and shed. Instead, these rugs are made of strips of hide (or faux hide) and woven into their desired finish.

Handmade Flatweave

  • Handmade flatweave rugs, also known as Kilim rugs, do not shed because they have no pile. Therefore, there is no excess material to shed. Because they are so flat in their construction, they are frequently paired with rug pads to add the extra comfort and grip.

Although shedding rugs can be a nuisance, there are still many reasons to incorporate these materials and constructions into your home. With the care instructions described above, you can take care of the shedding rug in its early days and weeks to minimize and prevent shedding for the life of the rug.
