How are Rugs Measured?

Rugs are first measured by their shortest and longest sides. This means that when a measurement states that a rug is 6x9, it is 9 feet long by 6 feet wide. Some rugs do not fit into exact, perfect measurements, which is why some rugs will show measurements like 6’7” x 9’2”, which means that the rug is 6 feet and 7 inches wide by 9 feet and 2 inches long. Whenever these measurements are shown, they do not include any extra fringe on the rug.

Other rugs with unique shapes are measured by their longest and widest parts. Cowhide rugs are a good example since they do not have perfect, clean-cut lines to measure. Measuring from the longest and widest parts, a measurement may be something like 7’x7’. Round rugs are measured by their diameter (the distance across the widest portion of the rug). With that, 9’ round rugs are a 9 foot circle.

Standard Sizes for Area Rugs

Rugs come in many standard sizes for every room of the home. Popular small rug sizes include 2x3 and 3x5. Medium sizes are typically 4x6, 5x7, and 5x8. Larger area rugs fit into the 6x9 and 8x10 category. Finally, extra large rugs are 9x12, 12x15, or other customizable sizes. Runner rugs are typically defined by their length instead of width, so you’ll find small runners to be about 4-5 feet long, medium ones to be 6-7 feet long, large ones between 8 and 10, and extra large runners being 11 feet or longer.

How to Calculate Rug Size Based on the Room

The exact size of your rug is dependent upon both the size of the room and the nearby furniture. However, some general rules apply to ensuring a rug is not too large for the room: the rug should be at least 6 inches away from the wall to keep the room from feeling smaller and imbalanced. In rooms like living rooms and dens, you will also base the size of the rug on the seating area that it is centered with, not necessarily the middle of the room itself. Dining rooms are special in that the rug should be perfectly centered beneath the table and have an extra one to two feet of rug on each side of the table so the chairs have room.

In general, these rug sizes are recommended for these room sizes:

  • 5’ x 8’ Room: 3’ x 5’ Rug
  • 7’ x 10’ Room: 5’ x 8’ Rug
  • 10’ x 12’ Room: 8’ x 10’ Rug
  • 12’ x 15’ Room: 9’ x 12’ Rug
  • 15’ x 18’ Room: 12’ x 15’ Rug

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug for a 14x14 room?

A 14x14 room could use rugs that are 8x10 or 9x12 to define larger areas. Square and round rugs that are between 8 and 12 feet in size can also work depending on the room’s layout and what furniture it is placed with.

What rug size for a 16x16 room?

16x16 rooms can be comfortably furnished with a 9x12 or a 12x15 rug, although if the rug is any bigger than 15’, the rug may be too close to the walls. Round and square options for a 16x16 room include any rugs that are 10-14 feet across.

Frequently Asked Questions (Continued)

How large of an area rug do I need?

The exact size of your area rug depends on the size of the room, what furniture it is lined up with, and how much the rug and furniture overlap. For specific guidelines, read our articles on choosing a living room rug, dining room rug, or bedroom rug.

How to measure the living room for an area rug?

Look at your furniture and plan for the rug to extend at least 8 inches past each side of the sofa. Typically, the longest side of the rug will run the length of the sofa. The rug may also sit in front of the sofa, under the front legs, or further beneath the sofa if you have a medium to large living room.
