Simply put, rug bunching is typically caused by the rug not being properly grounded. Rugs that don’t have much grip strength easily slide over uneven floors, wood surfaces, and even carpet. Bunching is especially common with rugs on carpets, since the carpet fibers beneath the rug move with the rug and any foot traffic and thus cause the rug to move with the carpet fibers beneath it. Similarly, heavy traffic can cause the rug to bunch and be damaged, especially if the rug isn’t rotated periodically and is always taking on heavy movement.

Bunching rugs isn’t a rare or uncommon problem, so there are plenty of solutions to fix those ripples and prevent the rug from moving in the future.
Rug Pad: Rug pads are one of the most popular options for preventing rug bunching. These pads, especially rubber rug pads, are ideally suited to hold the rug firmly in place to prevent slipping, sliding, and rippling. When the rug is in place, it will not move out of place with foot traffic or moving furniture; instead, it will hold firm and remain a beautiful, safe accent.
Rug Tape: Rug tape is a similar solution to rug pads, since they too hold the rug in place. Furniture: In rooms like living rooms and bedrooms, you can use furniture to anchor the rug and keep it in place. That security will help prevent bunching caused by the rug moving out of place. For the most security, place furniture around the edges and corners of the rug to keep those vulnerable areas planted on the ground. You may combine furniture anchoring with rug tape or rug pads to fully ground your rug and prevent sliding.

Adjusting Furniture: One of the most straightforward methods is weighing the rug down so that it lays flat again. By redistributing the weight of furniture around the rug and pressing down on those areas, you can remove ripples and get your rug to lay flat again. In the future, intentionally placed furniture can also help keep your rug from moving and prevent bunching.
Straightening the Rug: If the bunching isn’t too bad, then you can simply smooth the wrinkles out of the rug and straighten it out by weighing it down or treating the rug with gentle heat. Warm, damp cloths and steam can help coax the fibers back into their original state and flatten the rug’s surface. When you use warmth through steam cleaners or irons, be sure to use these tools at their lowest settings and avoid direct contact with the rug. Direct heat may flatten the rug, but it will also damage the fibers.
Using a Rug Gripper: Rug grippers like tape and rug pads can fix pre-existing bunching and prevent the rug from forming waves in the future. If the bunching is already bad, you may want to weigh it down first while it’s on a rug pad or gripper to further encourage the rug to lay flat.
