Rug How-To Guides
Rugs that do not lay flat can negatively impact a room’s aesthetic and present a tripping hazard to anyone who walks on it. Fortunately, rugs that have curling edges, bumps, or wrinkles can be brought back to life through some simple and straightforward methods. First, it is important to understand why rugs don’t stay flat and then see how the solutions solve that problem.
When rugs are shipped to your home, it is likely presented in a tightly rolled cylinder. This naturally means that the rug needs time to uncurl from the rigid container. However, even rugs that have been placed on the floor can curl, bend, and wrinkle depending on water damage, humidity, lack of a rug pad, or heavy traffic. No matter what the cause was, it is vital to read the rug’s tag before attempting to flatten it to ensure that you do not damage the rug. Below, we have detailed some top methods for easily flattening any size area rug.
This method is used primarily with new, rolled rugs, but it can be used for older rugs as well to fix curling edges. Unrolling the rug and then rolling it in the opposite direction will cause the rug’s fibers to bend in that other direction and uncurl the rug. If this is a brand new rug that is being stubborn, you may keep it rolled in this direction for several hours to further flatten it. Bending portions of the rug in the opposite direction can also help with particularly bumpy areas.
Adding weight on top of bumps and folds is an easy way to flatten the rug as long as you have patience. If the bump is particularly large or severe, you may want to keep a weight on it for several hours or even days. Small items like books and boxes can be used on focused spots, but large pieces of furniture can also help flatten the rug. Keep in mind the furniture will only flatten portions it touches, so choose furniture that covers a larger surface area of the rug to flatten large areas.

Rug pads add comfort, security, and grip to any rug. When a rug is placed on top of a rug pad, the pad will naturally grip the rug and keep it from curling at the edges or forming bumps. Depending on the severity of your rug’s curling, you may initially combine a rug pad with one of the other methods to flatten it, but after that is resolved, a rug pad will keep it flat.
Rug tape is often used around the sides and edges of a rug to hold it in place. Using rug tape on these surfaces and under other bumps/wrinkles can help flatten those areas and the rug at large. Plus, with the tape keeping the rug in its place, the rug will not form bumps or wrinkles because of rug movement or heavy traffic.
Using the sun to heat the rug is a more gentle way to loosen those fibers. Be sure to lay your rug flat and encourage it through pressure and movement to relax its fibers and remove the wrinkles. One thing to be wary of is extreme heat and light: the sun can melt fibers of the rug in extreme situations, and some rugs may fade in the presence of sunlight.
Hair dryers can provide a dry heat to soften any wrinkles and folds. The dryer should be used on a low heat setting as you determine the right level for your rug. Also, the dryer should be held between 6 and 9 inches away from the rug and should never linger on one area for too long. Use a gentle sweeping motion and your hands to help flatten the areas warmed by the hairdryer to ease your rug back into shape.
Curls, wrinkles, and bends in rugs are frustrating from a visual and practical standpoint. With the 8 methods listed above, you now have numerous options to restore your rug to life and create a beautiful, safe accent in your home.
