Rug Size Guides
In both traditional and open concept homes, rooms can benefit from coordinating rugs. Intentionally pairing rugs over the course of living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and other public spaces can help you create a cohesive, consistent style. In order to accomplish this goal, you do not need to use matching rugs in every room. Quite the contrary! There are many ways to coordinate rugs without falling into a monotonous scheme.
Choosing a rug is important for defining a specific room’s individual aesthetic, but rugs in neighboring spaces can also help define the home’s style and tone. This is especially important in open floor plans and open concept spaces, since multiple rugs are seen at the same time. In order to create a cohesive style throughout these rooms and avoid using the same rug/design over and over again, consider how the following elements can serve as thematic and stylistic ties between different rugs and spaces.
Color is one of the best ways to coordinate rugs. One method for connecting rooms by color is to invert the rug’s color palette in each space. For example, if one room features a grey rug with white accents, use a white rug with grey accents in the next room over. If you have a multicolored rug, use one of the rug’s secondary colors as the primary one in adjacent space. This simple method will enable you to carry over your existing color scheme and convey a new or similar tone based on your exact rugs. Some colors also just work well together, such as red and blue, black and white, and different neutral colors. Defining your goal with tone and color will enable you to create a consistent tone over a wider open space or over several adjacent rooms.
The texture and pile height of the rug impact the rug’s physical softness and visual appearance. A consistent material and pile height can be used across all the rugs is a simple, safe way to coordinate multiple rugs. However, varying the texture can help set the two spaces apart from one another and add visual interest. Some coordination is still needed through pattern or color, though. As an example, if one room’s rug has a beige raised wool pattern or shag print, use a neutral jute rug in the neighboring room. Be sure that the rugs have some similar elements through the patterns they display, their color schemes, or other features to ensure they work towards the same style goal.

Similar patterns can help bridge the gap between different rugs. It is common to use geometric rugs with other geometric, Persian with Persian, and boho with boho since each of these styles come in so many different iterations. The key is that the two rugs convey the same tone, whether that is minimalist, traditional, or eclectic. Rugs with similar patterns and designs can be mixed and matched, such as using a boho rug in one room and a geometric one in another since they have some similarities in designs and tone. However, some styles are so bold that they do not pair well with others. Contemporary, abstract rugs can feature a lot of detailing and artistry, and placing two contemporary rugs near one another may overwhelm the space. The key in pairing patterns is to ensure they convey a consistent tone, fit the overarching style of the home, and balance well with one another visually.
Style and pattern are often synonymous with one another. Persian is a type of rug, but there are also certain designs associated with Persian styles. Different interior design branches can be mixed and matched as long as they have some overlap in their key design principles. The boho and geometric styles are two options that are frequently combined, but they are far from the only pairing. Aside from the rug’s specific interior design style, the finish of the rug is another part of the style: distressed patterns are prominent in a variety of styles, such as farmhouse, vintage, coastal, and transitional. Choosing a similar finish or style can help create a cohesive style across the rooms.
The size and shape of the rug is dependent on the room that it’s in, where it is in the room’s layout, and how it balances with the nearby furniture. That being said, if it is possible to use similar or exact shapes across multiple areas, it can help create a cohesive design. Rectangular rugs are particularly great for living rooms and dining rooms since they work in many layouts and styles. It’s important to note that rug shapes should be similar, not necessarily identical. If you have a long cowhide rug in your living room, use a rectangular rug of similar dimensions and scale in the dining room. This is just one example, but it shows how important it is to consider how size and shape can both influence rugs in neighboring spaces. Some rooms may even have rugs layered with one another, which can add extra dimension and possibilities to pairing rugs in different areas.
Coordinating rugs in adjacent rooms and spaces can be a daunting task, but it does not have to be. By considering key areas like color, pattern, texture, style, shape, and size, you can find overlapping elements to tie your rug’s together stylistically and visually. With these facets in mind, you may now confidently choose rugs that bounce off one another and accent your personal style in new and unique ways.
