How To Clean Bathroom Rugs

Ideas and Advice > How to Clean A Bathroom Rug

A bathroom rug can do more than just provide a soft spot for your wet toes, a well-chosen rug can brighten and elevate the overall look of your space. You may be wondering how to clean bathroom rugs or how to wash bathroom mats, and you've come to the right place. Below we've highlighted the best ways to clean your bathroom rugs to keep them fresh and looking like new for years to come.

Shake It Out

Bathroom rugs can be shaken out daily to remove dirt and hair. After you’ve shaken out the rug, sweep or vacuum the bathroom floor to make sure debris doesn’t get back into your rug.

Vacuum

Bathroom rugs can be vacuumed using suction only, so we recommend disabling the beater brush . For smaller rugs, it may be easiest to vacuum the rug using the upholstery attachment.

How To Wash Bathroom Mats

How you clean bathroom rugs depends on what your rug is made out of. Check the label of your bathroom rug to determine what your rug is made of and how it should be cared for.

Cotton and Synthetic: Many bathroom mats are made from cotton or synthetic fibers. If this is the case, you can simply toss your bathroom rug in the washing machine. Wash your rug with cold water on a gentle cycle. Once your rug is washed, hang it to dry. Allow your bathroom rug to dry completely before putting it back in place.

We don't recommend using hot water or drying your bathroom rug in a dryer as excessive heat may cause damage and ruin your rug.

Wool and Natural Fibers: A natural fiber rug like a wool runner or textured jute rug, can make a bathroom feel luxurious and sophisticated. But, natural fibers need a little more care when cleaning as they shouldn't be tossed in the washing machine. We recommend you clean your wool or natural fiber rugs by hand only. To do so:

  • Mix together water with a small amount of mild detergent.
  • Using a clean sponge dipped in a water detergent mixture, scrub the rug. Start at the corner and work in a grid pattern to go over the entire rug.
  • Clean your sponge frequently to make sure you're keeping your rug clean and debris free.
  • Once you’ve scrubbed the entire rug, go over the rug again with clean water. Be sure all the detergent is removed as it can attract dirt once the rug dries.
  • Allow your rug to dry completely before putting it back in place on the rug pad. It's best to hang the rug or elevate it in some way so that air can circulate until the rug is completely dry.
