Cozy Fall Pillows

One of the easiest ways to get your home in a fall mood is by swapping out summery cushions for fall pillows in rich hues and interesting textures, and layering on plush throws. For 2018 I’m noticing a softer, more elegant take on fall coziness: think plum, cocoa, shimmering copper, and a bit of super-fluffy faux fur or sheepskin

Make a cozy first impression: Kick off the fall vibes as soon as you step through the door with a textured throw, pillow, and rug in warm, neutral hues. Pair up natural wood pieces plus a shiny accent for a can’t-miss look.

Consider color: When you’re planning your fall decor, it can be helpful to gather a few items on a table first, to see how they go together. Pick a soft blanket and layer on artwork, items from nature, and any decor you would like to use. Use your phone to snap a photo of your items together and refer to it while you’re out shopping to find pieces that coordinate.

Play up texture: If you’re going for a neutral or low-key color palette, but it’s looking a bit flat, you could probably use more texture. Aim for a mix of at least three different textures for a rich fall look. A few of my favorite textures for fall decorating include velvet, faux sheepskin, faux fur, nubby linen, woven items, copper, brass, and sisal.

It’s not all pumpkin and spice: Not a fan of pumpkin orange and maple leaf red? No worries. Try a rich plum as your main hue instead, and pair it with linen and cream. It’s elegant, current, and classic.

Breakfast Nooks for Happy Mornings

Having a good breakfast is such an important part of starting the day, and yet it’s so common to skip it altogether. Even if you simply sit down for a few moments to sip your coffee in peace and enjoy a quick bowl of oats or chia pudding, it can really set your day off on the right foot. Why not entice yourself to make the time with a welcoming breakfast nook?

If you have the space in your kitchen, a round table is a good choice, since it’s easy to maneuver around. Comfy chairs are a must, so I recommend splurging on a set you love (I adore the wishbone chairs shown here) and save on the table (Ikea has great basics). Always seek out the light, and position your breakfast table near a window when possible. Getting some morning sun while sipping coffee is the best!

Super tight on space? Seek out a drop-leaf table like the one shown above – it can be pulled out to seat more when friends drop by, and tucks neatly against the wall the rest of the time.

If you have the room and budget set aside, my favorite breakfast nook solution is a custom banquette, like the swooping version shown here. A banquette is great because tons of people can slide in, and if you get it covered in a stain-resistant fabric, it’s kid-friendly as well.

And of course, what good is a breakfast nook without a scrumptious breakfast? Even if you only have time for toast, you can make it extra-special by tracking down the best local bakery for bread or croissants, and treat yourself to a jar of seasonal jam.

For a quick breakfast nook refresh, get comfy with some new pillows. Here are my current favs:

Give Your Living Room A Fresh Look with Pillows

Blue Interior

Swapping out your throw pillows is a quick and easy way to give your living room a fresh look. A solid color sofa and chairs forms an easy to match base that can be livened up with accessories depending on the season. Try using warm colors and a richer mix of textures during the fall and winter, and lighten things up come spring. The living space shown above by designer Emily Henderson with its crisp striped rug, blue pillows, and woven tables, is a great example of how a few accessories can create a summery mood. This season, why not try giving your own living room a new look with fresh pillows?

Pillows

A few of our current favorites are shown here — it’s an eclectic mix, but each one speaks to the lighthearted mood of the warmer months. Why not try a classic stripe, botanical design, sunshine yellow, or vintage-style burlap pillow? You can’t go wrong with blue, whether it’s elegant or bohemian. And positive messages go with everything!

White Interior

So whether your style is feminine, eclectic, or traditional, think about adding a new set of pillows to your living room this season and see if it doesn’t perk up your space. When the weather begins to turn again, pop your “sunny season” pillows into a storage bench, and layer on the warmth and texture!
