Bring on the Plaid

Autumn is my absolute favorite season and I’m beyond ready for it. Summer was beautiful this year — more so than most — but I’m ready for football, layers, and plaid! While I don’t have a lot of the classic pattern lining my wardrobe, I do have a few pieces for my home that I really look forward to digging out as soon as the temperature starts dropping below 50-degrees in the evenings.

The obvious way to bring out season patterns is through accessories and small textiles — think throws, kitchen linens, etc. But another way is by switching up your bedding. I have the sweetest set of light grey flannel plaid sheets that more or less live on my bed during the chilliest months of the year.

Done right plaid can look downright modern. It’s all about the setting you place it in as well as the style you choose. A pattern with fewer color tones and a larger graphic look does the trick quite nicely.

If you’d rather bring plaid into your space in a more year round permanent way I’d suggest sticking to that same idea. Stick to the same color family as your other large pieces, a big and bold pattern instead of a smaller more detailed one, and sleek lines.

Plaid is one of the most timeless patterns, it’s been around for centuries and will be around for many more. Fall is a welcome time to experiment with this bold look in an unapologetic way.

Fashion Translation: Bohemian Florals

When the word ‘bohemian’ comes to mind, I feel like it can go in one of two directions: bohemian florals or bohemian global. This applies to both fashion and home, so today I want to talk about the floral version of the boho trend. I feel like bohemian florals tend to have an old world, found kind of feeling… sort of like you found a super special gem in your grandmother’s closet or sitting room.

In terms of color, I think picking the right hues is of utmost importance. Darker grounds like burgundy and rich aubergine feel modern when popped with pale pastels and sagey shades of green. I also love when the florals are neutral on neutral, making the statement way less impactful and easily incorporated into any living room or bedroom.

The scale of floral motifs is also important, too. I suggest thinking within extremes — either super large scale or smaller scale that covers the entire surface of your rug. The idea is to think of it as an extension of your favorite floral maxi dress for summer; pale colors, bohemian botanicals, and all. Because this look can get quite overpowering, I also urge you to keep the rest of your space fairly neutral. Think of how lovely these rugs would be with a simple linen toss back sofa, some neutral pillows, and black and white photography hanging on the walls!

Mudroom Makeover Ideas

To have an orderly and stylish entry that you are proud to welcome family and friends into takes careful planning. Each member of the household (including the dog) should ideally have at least a small dedicated space to put away gear and store important items when entering and leaving the home. Baskets and wall hooks are essential, but don’t forget to include something purely pretty as well — you will notice that in each of the photos featured here, there is an equal balance of practical storage and aesthetic appeal. Incorporating artwork, meaningful photos, and cherished decorative pieces will put a smile on your face each time you walk in the door, so don’t skip that step! In the space shown above, hooks and baskets rein in the mess, while a high shelf provides the perfect spot to display a collection of black and white photos, and a paper mache animal sculpture.

For a creative take (and one that works well in smaller spaces) consider a bulletin board framed with reclaimed wood, accessorized with hefty hooks, as shown here. Use art postcards, small photos, and inspiring quotes to create your own changeable display. Wall mounted barn-style lighting is an industrial cool look that also saves floor space in a narrow hall.

On a tight budget? No problem! Just stack up a few wooden crates as shown here to make your own rustic storage cubbies, and fasten a few pieces of scrap wood to the wall. One board with hooks can hold your coats, while another fitted with bulldog clips can hold a rotating display of photos.

If you’re feeling crafty, bust out the paint sample pots and go to town, customizing your wooden crates for a unique look in your favorite color scheme. Fasten your crates to the wall to transform them into floating shelves, or attach casters to the bottom to make a rolling shoe or magazine storage container.

And of course, no mudroom would be complete without a sturdy rug to protect your floors from scuffs. Choose a darker hue to hide the dirt… you’ll be glad you did! If you have a no-shoes policy in your home (a great way to keep floors clean) it is helpful to provide a spot to sit while taking off and putting on shoes — storage benches with shelving below and seating on top offer a space-saving solution.

So now it’s your turn: Do you have a full mudroom, or just a tiny entry area? How do you organize your space? Share your thoughts in the Comments!
