Tips for Getting Summer House Style

This summer, refresh your home with an easy, breezy, beachy look inspired by seaside cottages and organic-luxe resorts. For a quick start, bring in shells and stones collected on a beach walk, and display them atop piles of books on a console table. And speaking of books, swing by the bookstore — a gorgeous new seaside decorating or photography book could be just the thing to perk up your coffee table! Swapping out artwork for a beach scene is another easy change to make. Look for a single large-scale piece, or snap your own seaside photos, have them printed, and hang them in a neat grid on the wall.

In the space shown here, whitewashed walls provide a clean backdrop to weathered wood, Mexican blankets, and pretty patterned pillows. The vibe is relaxed and easy, just like summer decorating should be! To embrace this style in your own space, clear away excess clutter, bring in a few potted succulents, new pillows, and fresh, seasonal flowers, and put on a beach-inspired music mix.

Natural fiber rugs are a great choice for summer, because they feel deliciously cool on bare feet. Patterned pillows like this one or this one will perk up a plain, neutral-hued sofa. And if you are on the hunt for new seating, something low-slung and white or natural and woven would look just right for summer.

Summer Style 3

Personalize your space by making a few easy beach-inspired crafts, like painting simple white geometric designs on found driftwood, gluing shells to a mirror, or (if you’re feeling especially crafty) macrame a wall hanging. And what could possibly say summer more clearly than a hammock? Hang one on your porch, patio, or even indoors!

Traditional Oriental Rugs for Modern Interiors

Oriental Rugs 1

Oriental rugs are frequently seen in traditional spaces, where they bring an air of opulence that suits the luxe vibe of high-end interiors. However don’t discount this style of rug if your style runs more towards the simple and modern. Many designers, as exemplified by Kate Arends from Wit + Delight, are now using traditional rugs to great effect in clean, minimalist interiors.

When combined, the clean lines of modern or industrial furniture provide a striking counterpoint to the detailed handiwork of Oriental rugs. Look for floor coverings with rich reds or deep blues. Then add decor elements in powder coated steel, bleached wood, or molded fiberglass. When old meets new, you’ll be amazed at the results!

Bright and Juicy

Let’s face it — summer is upon us! If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to swap out the heavy wool and cozy flannel and swap in airy, woven cottons and lightweight, open knits. Oh, and don’t forget about color! Summertime is all about bold, bright color… you know, the hues that feel mouthwateringly juicy, almost as though they were literally squeezed from fresh fruits. Think vibrant fuchsia, saturated tangerine, sunshine yellow, grass green, even bright cerulean blue. Because these colors are so saturated, so rich in tone, might I suggest a pared down look? Keep the color palette simple, yet punchy, while letting your look’s silhouette do the talking. Feelin’ brave? Try a tonal look that still packs a punch by layering pieces all within the same color family.

This is also a look for the brave when it comes to home interiors. Not for the faint of heart, a bright and bold rug can add character and style to most any room. Juicy brights can fit into any room: from master bedroom to a cozy kitchen, we love the way these rugs can perk up a space. As with fashion, easy does it when designing your space around a juicy-hued rug. We suggest keeping accessories, artwork, and even wall color toned down. A great reference is the taupe-y base color paired with bold raspberry sorbet on this Surya Abigail rug. With a floor grounded in juicy brights, an optic white sofa and gilded accents simply pop.
