Room Guides
Bathroom rugs are highly stylish accents fitting for any bathroom. With their different designs, color palettes, textures, and overall appeal, these rugs can convey your personal aesthetic and create a comfortable bathroom. Not only are bathroom rugs in style, but they’re also practical accents that can improve your bathroom’s functionality and even safety.
Interior design trends constantly change. Bathrooms themselves have gone through quite the journey in the past 100 years, as they popularly featured carpets back in the 1970’s. That trend fell out of favor though, since carpets could be too moisture absorbent and remain musky or even grow moldy. Even though carpeted bathrooms are scorned at today, they did lead the way for including smaller, more mobile rugs in the bathroom. Today’s bathroom rugs are crafted to withstand the moisture of the room and highlight many different interior design styles.
Practically, there are plenty of ways bathroom rugs can positively impact your bathroom. These rugs can provide additional comfort to sinks, tubs, showers, or the bathroom as a whole. Plus, they can also absorb moisture from these areas and prevent that moisture from settling on your floor. The rug will act as a layer of protection for the floor in general, but in particular it will keep your floor from becoming a slick, dangerous surface. Safety is a great reason to include a rug, but they also boast unique styles based on their designs and where they're placed.
Bathroom rugs come in many shapes, sizes, patterns, colors, and materials. All of these facets help you customize your bathroom to suit your specific needs and aesthetic. Shape and size are two underappreciated facets that need to be carefully considered. Traditional rectangular rugs (2x3, 3x5, or runner) are highly versatile and can be used by vanities, tubs, showers, or general walkways. Uniquely shaped rugs like round, square, or other shapes can accent different areas of the room and convey a unique style. There is great versatile in area rugs not just by their shape and size, but also with their style potential.
Since area rugs are so diverse in their designs and composition, it is easy to choose a rug that suits your personal style. For example, you may be looking to create a sleek, modern bathroom. A simple rectangular rug that highlights a geometric pattern and simple color palette can help you create a streamlined contemporary design. Alternatively, more plush area rugs can define rustic bathrooms as completely cozy. These are just two examples of how diverse bathroom rugs are and how they can be tailored to different interior design styles.
Bathroom rugs are diverse in their designs, color palettes, and materials. While it’s easy to picture bathroom rugs of old that featured singular colors or even outdated designs, these are no longer the only options for bathroom rugs. Their designs have evolved over time to be more fitting for the modern day. With all that in mind, you can find a rug that is highly contemporary, designed with traditional tastes in mind, or vintage if you so choose. No matter what style you fall into, you can find a bathroom rug that fits your aesthetic and practically benefits your bathroom.

In some rooms, rugs feel like a simple afterthought and feel disconnected from the rest of the room’s design. Well, that doesn’t have to be the case with bathroom rugs. By placing your rugs intentionally by key areas and using supporting colors, you can easily incorporate your rug into the rest of the bathroom’s design to create a well-rounded, fully realized space.
Considering the practicality of your rug is one essential way to integrate it into the room’s overall design. When you intentionally place a rug by a tub, shower, sink, toilet, or vanity, then you give that rug a practical purpose. That practicality comes across and impacts the room’s overall design and flow. If you’re worried about whether these bathroom rugs will be just a temporary fad like carpeted bathrooms, don’t be; the intentionality and functionality of these rugs make them completely timeless.
A Safe Accent: If nothing else, it’s wise to place a bathroom ug by a tub or shower, Since these areas constantly see dripping water and excess moisture, the ground can become slick and unsafe very easily. A small bathroom rug can take away that slick surface and also reinforce the beauty of your tub or shower by connecting to that space’s style/color scheme.
A Natural Focal Point: Vanities and sinks can naturally act as a focal point in the bathroom. Whether you use a small 2x3 rug to accent a single sink, a runner rug to adorn a longer vanity, or two small rugs to pair with two sinks, there are plenty of ways to use rugs by your bathroom sink(s).
Unconventional Design: Aside from these standard placements, you can get creative with other unique layouts. Try layering different bathroom rugs to infuse a unique design, texture, and depth to the room.
There are many ways to use rugs in your home’s bathroom. Aside from using the rugs as decorative accents by sinks or vanities, bathroom rugs can also make your bathroom more safe and comfortable. By carefully considering your rug’s materials, grip, and placement, you can improve every facet of your bathroom and show off your unique aesthetic.
