A grey modern area rug can highlight your room’s decor by fitting into the same style and color palette. You can even look at your rug’s patterns or design for any shapes and imagery that you can mimic elsewhere in your wall art, poufs, pillows, and other decor. Whenever you design a room, go at it with a unified design vision and that will allow each element to shine as a piece of that grand design.
When you’re decorating with a grey modern rug, you have options on how you want to interpret that style. “Modern” is a style that’s often blended with others, such as modern farmhouse, modern boho, etc. Your grey modern area rug can really lean into a pure contemporary style or it can serve as a bridge between your two ideal styles.
As you shop for the rug that’s perfect for you and your specific style, consider these key areas.
Position: First up, it’s important to think through your room’s layout and how to fit a rug within that scheme. These general layouts will help you generate some ideas for your home.
Living Room: To set up your main seating area, center a rug in the middle of that space. You have choices on whether you place the rug in front of the seats, under their front legs, or further under the chairs. Another idea is to use a smaller rug elsewhere to establish a separate sitting area.

Bedroom: If your bed is centered along the wall and is a main focal point, you can accentuate that by layering a rug under the bed. There are many ways to go about that, but common layouts include placing the rug all the way under the bed, under the bottom two-thirds of it, or closer to the foot of the bed. If your bed is off to one side or against a wall, line up a rug in the middle of the room or along the side of the bed to add visual interest and connect multiple areas of the room.
Kitchen: When adding a grey modern rug to your kitchen, you typically will use smaller 2x3, 3x5, or runner rugs. The small rectangular rugs fit well in front of sinks or stoves while runners are ideal in narrow kitchens or kitchens with an island.
Bathrooms: Bathrooms will also use those smaller rugs, but they’re used in different ways. 2x3 and 3x5 rugs are great for in front of tubs, showers, or sinks while runners are ideal in front of a double vanity.

Shape/Size: Once your layout is set, finalize the size and shape of your rug. Some sizes have been recommended above, and medium to large sizes like 5x7, 8x10, and 9x12 are other sizes that tend to work in many homes. The size you choose will depend on how you’re layering it with the furniture and the size of the room itself. That layering will affect the shape of the rug you choose as well. Ultimately, the rug’s size and shape should be visually balanced within the space so that the rug doesn’t overwhelm or underwhelm the area.
Pattern: As stated earlier, modern rugs can branch into different facets of design. The patterns you choose can be geometric, persian, abstract, or some other design. The design you choose should connect to the style(s) you fall into and have the right amount of detailing for that space so that it isn’t all consuming or too basic.
Color: Grey modern rugs come in a variety of hues, so your first step is to determine what shade of grey you want in the forefront of the rug. Then, decide on what other colors you want included in the rug. Grey is commonly paired with white, black, pink, blue, beige, and other tones.
