History Of Wool Weaving
8x10 wool rugs are a time-tested interior design staple. But where exactly do they originate? The history of wool rug weaving is mysterious and not without contention, as many countries and cultures lay claim on this globally-influential invention.
The oldest wool rug found to date is known as the Pazryk carpet, discovered in Siberia in 1949. Its exact source is unknown, but it is believed to have been woven over 2,000 years ago.
That may be astonishing, but believe it or not, humans have been using wool to create textiles for even longer than that. Evidence of goat and sheep shearing suggests humans have been weaving with wool for as long as 7,000 years!
In that time, wool weaving has undergone countless evolutions. Wool types and treatments have been influenced by geography and natural resources; weaving styles have been influenced by cultural loom-building practices; and colors, patterns, and styles have been influenced by everything from religion to local politics to natural events and landscapes.
In many ways, the history of 8x10 wool rugs is an index of many cultures moving through the millennia, exchanging ideas on their way to the present.
Why Choose A Wool Rug?
Many designers agree that wool is, hands down, the best material for 8x10 rugs. Wool:
