Pro Tips for Buying and Decorating with Southwestern Rugs
The best-known native art in North America is seen in the unique and intricate designs of Navajo Indian area rugs. The more generic term for this style is Southwestern rugs. This name is commonly used to identify designs based upon the work of both these Navajo artists and their Mexican and Pueblo counterparts. Southwestern rugs existed on the North American continent long before the arrival of Europeans. Originally Southwestern rugs were made of hand-spun cotton thread, but after the Spanish brought domestic sheep to the Americas, the Southwestern artisans primarily switched to wool. Because Southwestern area rugs contain design elements and colors not seen in other styles of area rugs, they truly can serve as the focal point of any room in which they are placed. In fact, it's not uncommon for interior designers to place Southwestern rugs on the wall instead of the floor! There are three major sub-styles of Southwestern rugs. These include the traditional Navajo Rugs previously mentioned. Also there are Spirit Rugs, which incorporate symbols and figures meaningful to certain Native American cultures. And there is now a group of Southwestern rugs referred to as Modern Southwestern Rugs. These rugs take the traditional colors and motifs of Southwestern rugs and add updated patterns or palettes to give them a more contemporary look. Of all the many styles of area rugs available, none deserves being called art for the floor more than beautiful Southwestern rugs. Complementary throw blankets also work extremely well with Southwestern rugs to create an exciting lodge look in your den, basement or rec room. Rugs Direct has one of the largest selections of Southwestern rugs available anywhere - over 600 styles and counting! It's a bold step, but decorating with Southwestern rugs could give your home an exciting, unique look that is both historic and timeless.
