How to Get Modern Farmhouse Style

Modern farmhouse style marries the crisp color palette and clean lines of modern design with the warmth and character of rustic, vintage finds and materials. Read on for ways to bring this popular style into your home, no matter where you live.

Simple color palette. Sticking with a super-simple base color palette of black, white, and natural wood is a great way to lay a strong foundation for your modern farmhouse look. In the kitchen, think of doing white subway tiles, white cabinets, and wood floors. If you are renting (or just not in the market for a major remodel) work with what you’ve got by adding reclaimed wood shelves, black industrial sconces, and black or rubbed bronze knobs and drawer pulls. Warm up the look with a cozy rug on the floor in spice tones or classic farmhouse stripes.

White shiplap. Adding crisp white shiplap to your walls is a wonderful way to bring a fresh, modern farmhouse look to a newer build. Hang a few small original paintings or framed prints of landscapes, and consider a modern riff on antique milking stools with updated, paint-dipped versions.

Barn doors. Who can resist a great barn door? Try replacing the door to your pantry with a set of charming barn doors (as shown here) for a completely new look. Barn doors are great in small spaces where clearance for a regular door swing is tight — but do measure carefully, as you’ll need enough room on either side of the door frame for the barn door hardware. If you’re handy, this is a doable DIY project, and the options are limitless.

Utilitarian fixtures and reclaimed wood. Farmhouse style is about no-frills, functional designs that have stood the test of time — think of farmhouse sinks, barn-style light fixtures, and rustic reclaimed wood. In the bathroom shown here, reclaimed wood covers the ceiling for a rustic look, while crisp shiplap wainscoting and black barn lights keep things streamlined and simple.
